American Idol Audition

(Best Syndication) Rosie O’Donnell accused the television show “American Idol” of racism on “The View” Tuesday. She said that it was unfair that contestant Frenchie Davis was kicked off the show because racy photos were discovered, but Antonella Barba was not after raunchy photos of her surface on the Internet.

Rosie said “I think its racist. I do. I think it’s because [Frenchie is] black.” She went on to say “One girl’s nude on the Internet – she gets kicked off the show and is humiliated and disgraced and, like, limps away with her tail between her legs, and the other girl is still on. Can’t sing a note by the way.”

Co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck brought up a point that was dismissed by the rest of “The View” panel. “Wasn’t Frenchie making money off her photos?” she asked. O’Donnell went on to compare the looks of the contestants. She said that Davis was “weightist.” Davis is full-figured, while Barba is slender.

The producers of “American Idol” released a statement Wednesday disputing O’Donnell’s claims. The Fox Producer, Nigel Lythgoe said “Without wishing to add to the obvious self-promotion of Ms. O’Donnell, I feel as though I must refute her absurd and ridiculous claims that ‘American Idol’ is racist and/or weightiest.

“Ms. O’Donnell has, once again, spoken without thought or knowledge. Viewers need only look at the show tonight to realize that ‘American Idol’ constantly confirms to America that talent has nothing to do with weight or color.”

But Davis does not see it that way. She told the New York Post that she was treated unfairly. “I think it’s fantastic if ‘Idol’ has evolved and I think it’s fantastic she won’t have to go through what I went through four years ago… But if the rules have changed, I believe there should be something to make up for the fact that I was humiliated needlessly.”

American Idol Surprise Event To Be Revealed Thursday

American Idol Surprise Event To Be Revealed Thursday

At the beginning of the top 8 guys performance show, Ryan Seacrest said “It’s a very big week for the show, not only will we give you your top twelve on Thursday, but we’re going to announce one of the most important events in Idol history. Trust me, you’ll want to be here for that on Thursday.”

The important event that Ryan Seacrest referred to is likely the same surprise event that American Idol producers have been teasing about for months. What is the surprise event? The only thing we know for sure is that according to American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe it’s not about an individual. In an interview with TV Week, Lythgoe denied that either Paul McCartney or Michael Jackson would be coming on the show.

Lythgoe also told TV Week, “But it is something very special, and I did say it does involve “American Idol” and it also involves America. It involves the viewers, it involves a whole big issue here. It’s something that I know we’re all very proud of. We’re going to be the first program that will talk about this sort of thing and well, it will have to wait until next time. But I can’t wait to tell you.”

So what is this big surprise event? Lythgoe’s hints are very confusing, but that the surprise event is being announced on the same night as the top twelve finalists are being announced is very interesting. It’s always been very suspicious that many of most featured contestants during the auditions were cut with barely a mention during Hollywood week. Could it be that the American Idol wildcard show is coming back?

If the surprise event is not a wildcard show, then our prediction would be that it is some kind of World Idol competition, maybe with a charitable component. Lythgoe’s reference to that it does involved “American Idol” makes us think that maybe it’s bigger than just America and American Idol. Post your opinions below on what you think the surprise event is.

Jennifer Hudson Surprises American Idol Contestants

Jennifer Hudson Surprises American Idol Contestants

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson returned to her American Idol roots and made a surprise visit to the show last week to support this season’s contestants. Hudson made it to the finals of the TV talent show in season three, but she was voted off the program. Fantasia Barrino went on to claim victory.

In a bid to prove she has no hard feelings about missing out on the
chance to become an Idol winner, Hudson secretly returned to the show to offer the current batch of wannabes encouragement. The Dreamgirls star says, “I just went to visit the show. I wanted to surprise the kids. I wanted to meet the contestants.”

“It was elimination day. I still remember that day. I still get nervous on Wednesdays, because I was always in the bottom three (to be voted off the
show). So I wanted to go and encourage them. The last thing I said is, ‘Remember, it’s OK if you get eliminated!’ I’m the perfect person to tell them that.”

‘American Idol’ flap: Barba vs. Frenchie

‘American Idol’ flap: Barba vs. Frenchie

LOS ANGELES — Frenchie Davis, dumped by “American Idol” in 2003 for lingerie shots posted on a Web site, moved on to Broadway success and thought she had buried a humiliating chapter of her young life.

That changed in the last few days after contestant Antonella Barba was allowed to stay on the top-rated Fox series despite the emergence of racy online photos that purport to be of Barba, but with no verification.

The first big controversy of the show’s sixth season swelled Tuesday when fans and a civil-rights activist rallied to Davis’ side, saying she was the victim of unfair and potentially biased treatment. Davis is black; Barba is white.

“We object to having one rule for black contestants and a different rule for white contestants who exhibit the same behavior,” said Najee Ali, community activist and founder of Project Islamic H.O.P.E.

Davis said she is bewildered over what’s happened with Barba, 20, of Point Pleasant, N.J.

“I don’t necessarily think that (it’s racism), but I can certainly look at this and understand why people would draw that conclusion,” Davis said Tuesday from New York, hours before going on stage in the musical “Rent.”

“I’m not bashing `Idol’ or Antonella. She’s a beautiful girl and she’s young. I think it’s great that she didn’t have to go through what I went through,” said Davis, 27, who suggested that the show’s producers might have learned from how they treated her.

Davis would welcome a public apology from them as “a great start.” But she said she is owed more for “the manner in which I was humiliated and the manner in which Antonella was defended and protected by the same people who humiliated me.”
“Now they need to come to the table and see what we can do to make up” for her treatment, Davis said. She declined to say if she would seek a financial settlement or a record contract or other deal.

Belinda Foster, Davis’ manager, took part in a small protest Tuesday with Ali outside the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles where “American Idol” tapes. She said there are stark differences in the treatment of the two contestants.

Foster noted the sympathetic comments of “American Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe, who was quoted on Entertainment Weekly’s Web site recently saying he was aware of the photos associated with Barba, but adding: “It’s sad, isn’t it, that your best friends are the ones that come forward with information that will go to Smoking Gun or put your photographs on the Web?”

Fox and the producers have declined further comment on Barba, who was to perform again Wednesday as the contestants are narrowed down this week to the 12 finalists. All the singers, including Barba, have been unavailable for interviews.

A source close to the show, who asked not to be identified because of the lack of authorization to comment publicly, said Fox and the producers believe seminude photos of Barba were posted without her consent and that racier shots, showing a sex act, were of a woman other than Barba.

Whether Barba posted any photos or allowed them to be posted is immaterial, Ali said.

“`American Idol’ has first and foremost proclaimed it is a family show. … No matter who made the photos public, it still speaks to her moral character and integrity, and certainly her silence speaks for itself,” he said.

A fan group lead by Chris Tian, a singer-songwriter in Portsmouth, N.H., is calling on Fox to give Davis another shot at competing on “Idol.”

Although she’s wonderful in “Rent,” Tian said, “a lot of Broadway artists don’t get record deals. This could open up the path for her big record deal and big break.”

The series has rarely managed a quiet year, with past issues ranging from voter complaints over overloaded phone systems to a contestant’s allegation of an affair with judge Paula Abdul, which she denied.

The big-voiced Davis, on the verge of being voted a finalist by viewers in the year in which Ruben Studdard won, said she was honest with producers about posing for lingerie photos at age 19, five years before going on “American Idol.”

In a statement Tuesday, Fox said, “We have never discussed the specifics of why Ms. Davis was eliminated, nor will we now.”

The network said it had “no desire to revisit history and sully the reputation of Ms. Davis. She was removed from the show over four years ago and has gone on to a successful performing career.”

That achievement has been a salve, of sorts, for Davis.

“I don’t feel anything about the show. I haven’t watched it. When `American Idol’ comes on at 8 o’clock at night, I’m on stage,” Davis said.

Homeward bound: But Taunton native Nick Pedro refuses to slam ‘Idol’

Homeward bound: But Taunton native Nick Pedro refuses to slam ‘Idol’

Simon Cowell said he lacks charisma, but ousted “American Idol” contestant Nick Pedro is a class act.
Despite good reviews from the judges for his performance of “Fever,” the 25-year-old Taunton native was sent packing Thursday, something Cowell blamed on his personality. Pedro refused to bite back.
“I just wanted to seem very appreciative,” he said during a telephone interview yesterday from Hollywood before boarding a plane for Boston. “I wanted to leave the show with honor. I can understand how people are taken aback, and you kind of want to say harsh things.”

There’s been a petulant attitude running amok at “Idol,” with some contestants rolling their eyes at the judges and challenging their criticism. But Pedro would have no part of it.
“I wanted to be like an American idol,” he said. “I want to be someone kids can emulate and be a good role model, because that’s lacking in the entertainment business.”
Pedro, a local favorite who made it to the Hollywood rounds last season before quitting, tried out again this year and landed a spot in the Top 20, a feat of which he’s still proud.
“I made it down to the Top 20 over 100,000 contestants,” he said. “It’s very satisfying. It was bittersweet. I’m bummed to go home. I really hope it’s not the end of things. But I would never trade the experience for the world.”
Pedro was as surprised as his fellow contestants that he was voted off and still isn’t sure why.
“Maybe they assumed I was safe because the judges said good things. Who knows?” he said.
Pedro, who earned a reputation as the season’s crooner, fared better with the judges than several of his fellow contestants, but he doesn’t think he’s better than anyone else on the show.
“All of us on that show have a great degree of talent for singing,” the ex-salesman said. “I am just honored to share a stage with them. One day I might be able to say to my kids, ‘Hey, Daddy was on stage with that guy back in the day.’ There are great voices on this show.”
Though Pedro wanted to stick around Hollywood for the whole season, he’s looking forward to being home.
“I can’t wait to see my family, my sister and mom, and friends,” he said. “I haven’t seen anyone in over a month, and before that, it was limited. And I really want some home cooking, some good Portuguese food.”
One more thing.
“If someone reads this, I’m still pursuing a musical career,” he said. “I want to make an album.”
